Sculpture by Highly Acclaimed British Artist Installed at Boscombe Pier

A sculpture, designed by highly acclaimed British artist Simon Hitchens, has been installed at the entrance to Boscombe Pier.

The piece of public art is caller From Dawn until Dusk and is designed to compliment the £10million re-development at Boscombe Spa Village. Made up of two halves depicting the sun and moon rising and falling in the east and west, the granite sculptures highly reflective polished surface is designed to reflect the sea and sky enabling the piece to interact with the surrounding environment.

Sculpture for Boscombe

Councillor Beverley Dunlop, Cabinet member for Economy & Tourism is quoted on the official website for tourism in Bournemouth as saying; “Residents will be pleased to know that the public art has been entirely funded out of the Boscombe Spa Village regeneration scheme which was agreed in 2005 – and as people know, this is from the sale of land for the development into Honeycombe Beach by Barratt Homes.

“The local community expressed their desire for a sculpture in the area and the challenge was to create a piece of artwork that would stand the test of time but also work with and compliment the existing iconic buildings. The £70,000 has covered the total cost for design, procurement, construction, materials, and installation of the sculpture which was commissioned over a year ago.”

Public consultation in 2003 around the Boscombe Spa Village regeneration scheme revealed a desire for public art in Boscombe.  This view was reinforced last year when an art consultant undertook a consultation process to canvass public opinion. The consultation sought to identify expectations from local residents, traders and groups and concluded that there was a demand for some form of signature sculpture at the site.

Artist Simon Hitchens trained in sculpture at West Surrey College of Art and Design and Bristol Polytechnic where he received his BA (Hons) in 1990. He worked in stone until 2000 when he moved on to glass and resin. His work has caused considerable note in artistic circles and he has been invited to exhibit in major museums and galleries across Europe.
